Sezela is the Zulu expression
for “he who smells out” referring to a wily crocodile which devoured a number of
the local Malangeni tribesmen living on the banks of the river in the area. On
hearing of this fearful creature during his 1828 trip south, King Shaka vowed
that he would have its hide and dispatched his bravest impis to do the deed.
When Shaka came down the coast with his army, he killed the crocodile to make
use of its skin. The Sezela was first known as the Malangeni River after the
Malangeni people who lived on its banks. The name was later changed to Sezela |
